Teeth Cleaning
Teeth cleaning, also known as dental prophylaxis or professional teeth cleaning, is a preventive dental procedure aimed at removing plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains from the teeth. It’s typically performed by a dental hygienist or dentist and is an essential part of maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.
The teeth cleaning process typically involves the following steps:
Physical Examination: Before starting the cleaning procedure, the dental hygienist or dentist will visually examine your mouth and may also take X-rays to assess the overall oral health and identify any potential issues.
Plaque and Tartar Removal: Using specialized tools such as a scaler or ultrasonic scaler, the dental professional will carefully remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surfaces of your teeth, including along the gumline and between teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth, while tartar is hardened plaque that cannot be removed by brushing alone.
Teeth Polishing: After plaque and tartar removal, the teeth are polished using a gritty toothpaste-like substance and a rotating brush or rubber cup. This helps to remove surface stains and smooth out the tooth surfaces, making it harder for plaque to adhere to them.
Flossing: The dental professional will then floss between your teeth to remove any remaining plaque or debris that may be lodged between them.
Fluoride Treatment (Optional): In some cases, a fluoride treatment may be applied to the teeth after cleaning. Fluoride helps to strengthen tooth enamel and can provide additional protection against cavities.
Education and Recommendations: Throughout the cleaning procedure, the dental professional may provide guidance on proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as recommend oral care products or lifestyle changes to improve oral hygiene.
It’s generally recommended to have professional teeth cleaning performed every six months as part of a regular dental check-up routine. However, the frequency may vary depending on individual oral health needs and any underlying dental conditions. Regular teeth cleaning, along with daily brushing and flossing, is crucial for maintaining optimal oral health and preventing dental problems in the long run.
